Elkit - Murholt pickup

This is an integrated violin and pickup system.
It was built by the Danish luthier Richard Murholt in 1988.

Murholt has built instruments for some of the most famous Danish jazz fiddlers.

The pickup system was based on a design called Elkit which Murholt crafted into the instruments he built.

Elkit is a electrodynamic pickup and works much like a ribbon microphone, with the strings being the ribbon.

Murholt refined the Ekilt system and added a possibility of balancing the strings with 4 small potentiometers and he added a new transformer to the preamp.

Violin & viola EQ and frequencies part l

When playing in an amplified setting it is good to know some of the key frequencies in the tonal spectrum of the violin.

This will make it a lot easier to target the right frequencies when eq'ing and to communicate with the sound engineer in a language he understands.

Knowing the frequency for each string is only a small part of understanding what is going on.
The harmonics of each note are a big part of the perceived tone and timbre of a bowed instrument.

Carbon Copy analog delay

A delay is a versatile effect for the fiddle and can color the tone in a broad range of genres - from folk over blues, jazz and rock.

The MXR Carbon Copy is a simple analog delay. It has 3 control knobs and a push-button for activating the modulation option.

Fishman Aura Spectrum DI - part Ill

Here is the third part of the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI test.

This time I will be going through the images one by one so you can compare the effect the different images can have on one instrument pickup combination.

You can see the two first parts of the Fishman Aura Spectrum tests here.

Fishman Aura Spectrum DI - part Il

I have now made a different test setup for the Aura Spectrum DI.

This time I am using the Hengsheng violin with the Bradivarius pickup.

I want to go a little more in depth with the blend part of the preamp, so you are able to hear what the images add to the sound.

Also take a look at the Fishman Aura Spectrum DI test part I

Bradivarius bridge pickup

I have for a while wanted to test the Bradivarius bridge pickup.

The maker is Bradley Higgins, a luthier from Hartford New York, who builds beautiful acoustic instruments.

He wanted to provide a bridge pickup solution for his instruments and made the Bradivarius pickup.

Great pickup sound

I was just browsing a little on youtube and found this clip with Darol Anger and The Furies. Darol is playing a London five-string fiddle from G. Edward Lutherie, and I must say I find the apparent tone of the pickup really good, very clean and effortless.
I do not know which other gear is used but it looks like it is only the built in pickup through a preamp.
I will have try and get a chance test these instruments from G. Edward Lutherie.
