Even if you do not have that particular reverb a lot of the controls are essentially common on all reverbs.
Reverbs are very useful in conjunction with with pickups or more directional mics for giving a more lively feel.

Yianny Kuc also goes into more experimental sounds in the last half of the video.

I have been using the Remic 5200LB for more than a year now. It is a nice handmade mic, which is not intrusive and has a good sound and is very feedback resistant - the most feedback resistant mic I have ever tried on my fiddles.

My first setup comprised a Sennheisser G3 system going into a Headway EDB-1 (discontinued) preamp for EQ. After discovering that the allowed wireless frequencies in Denmark was not allowed within the UK, I ditched the Sennheisser (but I would like to be wireless so I am searching for a system)....

The hardwired setup was then made up of the Headway preamp plus a Behringer micropower PS400 providing 48v phantom, as the Headway only provides 18v.

Of course this was not ideal (too many boxes) and I have been looking for a compact pedal style mic preamp with EQ.

That was when I discovered the Zoom A3. It has a pickup input, with settings for flat, magnetic and piezo PU and a 48v phantom powered mic input and it has 3 band graphic EQ plus 2 FX processors with 40 selectable FX.

The Zoom A3 is made for guitar, so it has got a body modeling feature I will not be using, but the rest makes up for a versatile pedal.

For last gigs I have been trying it out and must say it looks/sounds promising. I will have to get more into the setup and handling, so stay tuned for an upcoming article on that.

At the moment the Zoom is set up to provide preamp for the mic and parametric EQ along with the 3 bands of graphic EQ (hardware buttons) on top of that I have a hall reverb and I think it sounds nice through my AER alpha amp, but further tweaking needed. (I am always tweaking ;) )

Again it looks like zoom has their eye on the musicians, who need an easy to use portable recorder for good quality sound and video.

Also the Q4 adds a bit more in functionality compared to other music/video recorders like the Sony HDR MV1 or Olympus LS-20M HD.
They are aimed at guitarists but have some interesting features for amplified strings as well.

The two amps contains a full-range speaker system and 75watt and 150watt respectively and can be configured via an iOS app, for either ipad or iphone.

This way the tone can be highly customized for hard to amplify instruments such as stringed instruments.
The Vi-Vi electro-acoustic violin is a fusion of wood and carbon fibre and with a Stringamp pickup system.

The design is a quite traditional Chanot shape, which is often seen on carbon fibre violins. But the Vi-Vi has chosen spruce for the top and maple for the neck and scroll.

Later on there should be a cello with the same pickup system.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-57743261342943928442013-11-23T10:34:00.003+01:002013-11-23T10:36:24.155+01:00Violin Bridges

I have been returning occasionally to this site, where you can see pics of old bridges from a lot of makers.

There are good points as to what the correct measurements are for a bridge.

The pictures include bridges for violin, viola, cello and double bass.

The bridges look so amazingly different so have a look .
At that time there was not any sound clips available and so I thought it was just a revival of the ZETA Jazz.
In the looks department there is nothing new, but the sound is a little different. It is always hard to evaluate sound quality from a youtube clip.

I did some tests with a colleagued, who needed a non-permanent pickup.

We took a good 4 hours trying out some of my pickups and mics.

The choice was for me a little surpricing: A B-Band 1470 pickup mounted in a certain spot on his fiddle and viola sounded great, both natural and with a good amount of feedback rejection.

I decided to make some further testing on this pickup. Hopefully, if time allows, I will be able to present some soundclips and more in depth thoughts on placement soon.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-49833857313751569972013-10-23T12:49:00.001+02:002013-10-23T20:01:41.293+02:00Acoustic Image FlexAcoustic Image is know for their high-power light weight acoustic amps.

The unit is actually designed for Upright Bass and it features two channels, an active (phantom power) and a passive channel (designed for pickups). Both channels have 1 band of parametric EQ and mid-level adjustment. When summed an additional 3 band graphic eq is available.
Be aware that the video is made by D'Addario strings, so of course he also talks positively about their strings.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-76578413744038695332013-10-04T10:04:00.003+02:002013-10-04T10:05:15.174+02:00Svend Asmussen

One of the big icons in Danish music is Svend Asmussen.
He is of course famous for his fiddle playing on the many jazz recordings he have done, but he is also know as a talented multi instrumentalist and composer.
He has played with all the big names throughout the history of jazz and continues to play at a very high level even at an age of 97.

I found a great interview written by Richard Brooks for Fiddle Magazine in 2005 (in 4 parts), which I would like to share with you: http://www.scvfa.org/newsletter/articles/SvendAsmussen_FiddlersRag2005_03-04-05.pdf

The article tells us about his life with music, about jazz and Svend Asmussens collaborations and recordings. There is also a part on his gear, violin and electronics, which I of course have read many times :-)

At the end there is a transcription of the song: Swing ManoucheUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-53045075760445391762013-09-25T11:06:00.001+02:002013-09-25T11:06:47.968+02:00Sonic Violins - Electro Acoustic ViolinsOne brand of electro-acoustic violins I have not featured here on the blog, is actually a system I have known for a long time.
Actually this is an DIY project about making an entire electric fiddle from scratch. I find the part about the magnetic pickup the most interesting.

See the project here

Not many makers of electric violins have been using magnetic pickups, I know of only a couple.

I think the problems described here are part of explanation, but never the less I find it striking that almost every electric guitar is made with electromagnetic pickups.

The violin in the picture was made by Siegmund Guitars and is not the one described in the project it is just quite beautiful i think.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-33208616531199948112013-09-12T09:00:00.000+02:002013-09-12T09:00:16.066+02:00DIY in-bridge piezoPaul Walster has a couple of nice projects on his blog.

This diy project is a little harder than a beginners level, but I found it very interesting and very nicely described.
Clark Huckaby is a musician a musician, audio electronics technician and recording engineer. I found him while searching for good articles on amplification of fiddle.

While this article is a bit old I really found it to be quite interesting with some good info and observations.

It covers 4 subject: Microphones, pickups, preamps/amps/monitors and a chapter on how a pickup "hears" the bowing.
I just found the Hurley Pickups website the other day.

The violin and cello pickups are rather conventional looking piezo wedge pickups, but they look well made.

Hurley Pickups also make a nice compact preamp for all of their piezo pickups. It has lots of gain and what seems like a variable lowpass filter.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9099624848530370199.post-56755492799819006552013-09-09T10:21:00.000+02:002013-09-09T10:23:03.963+02:00 Mishuyama active pickupsFound this very inexpensive Romanian pickup from Doze.
One of the players I found is Shenzo Gregorio, who has a couple of youtube videos on how to play the rock viola.
Quite fun videos, so I thought I would share them with you today so you have something to do in the weekend.
